in the city that never sleeps...

over the past couple of weeks, i have found myself very sleep deprived and catching a quick nap wherever i can. as i've done this, i've noticed there are many others around me doing the same. today, at work, was the most obvious. we were running a little behind schedule and had 2 people in the waiting room and when i went out to call one of them back, they were both completely asleep.
for me, my naps happen on the subway or bus. i usually find myself drifting off on the subway on the way to school. there's just something about slight rocking of the train combined with the music from my ipod that puts me right to sleep. it's usually only for about 5-10 min, but it's just what i need before sitting in class.
school has proven to be slightly more difficult than i thought it was going to be, mainly because i have computer science professors that are mainly teaching to computer science students, so they talk in a very different language than i'm used to. luckily, i have a very talented brother that i can call on and that can help me write the computer programs that i have to do!!
well, i'm going to try and get some sleep in a real bed..i'll be home in december and can't wait to see everyone!!

race for the cure

last sunday, the 10th, i participated in the race for the cure here in manhattan. it was really an amazing sight to see so many people in central park supporting such a great cause. there were over 25,000 walkers and runners plus many people along the way cheering everyone on. the most touching moment was seeing all the survivors in one place. it really made an impact and reminded everyone why they were there. i'm so glad i was able to participate and will definitely be doing in next year. i chose to do the run and made it in just over 27 min! i was pretty happy with my time considering it was a little over 3 miles.

otherwise, school is going well. i really feel old in my discrete math class, but i'm pretty sure i'm the only one that knows my age! i'm having to remember all of the things i did back in not only college, but in high school. i'm really going to have to work hard in the beginning weeks so i can remember how to do everything.

work is going well, i'm there all the time. i work 6 days a week there and go to school 4...needless to say, there's not a lot of down time at the moment, but it's all worth it in the long run. hope everyone is doing well. i don't think i'm going to get to go home until christmas, which bums me out, but it will be great to see everyone then. also, mom is going to be out next month, so i'm really looking forward to that. i can't believe i haven't been able to see her since december!! way too long. can't wait for you to get here, mom!

us open

last friday, i got to go to the us open and watch some great tennis. dave and i went last wednesday to try and get tickets, but after standing in line for a little over 2 hours, we decided we would be better off buying tickets for friday so we could spend more time on the grounds. however, we ended up having about as much time on friday as we would have on wednesday. thursday night, we went out with one of dave's friends and meghan.
one of meghan's friend's friend won a contest at a local bar and they had free beer for them and all their friends for 2 hours...that was followed by a karaoke bar and then it was 3am...i had to be at school at 10 to register for classes and it, as expected, lasted longer than i had planned. partially because the lady that was "helping" me was not very helpful at all. long story short, we didn't end up getting to the open until about 2 (same time as we would have gotten in on wednesday).
overall, i think it was a good choice, mainly because there were better people playing by friday and i got to see a couple people i wouldn't have been able to on wednesday. the pic above is of andy murray. it was a great time, but next year, i will make sure to buy tickets online and print a schedule. hopefully, we won't have the same amount of rain next year, either!

as far as school goes, i never did get registered because the computer shows that i don't have the pre-requisites for the classes i want to take and the very helpful advisor i met with didn't think she needed to pick up the phone and fix the problem. i'm going back on tuesday to see if i can meet with someone a little more proactive. for classes, i'm going to be taking translations and geometry on tuesdays and thursdays and discrete math on mondays and wednesdays. don't think it's going to be too stressful, but i don't want to slack off either. i'm so excited to get back to school, but i realized today that i'm not prepared, at all!! i don't have notebooks, books, or a calculator...i need to get busy this week.
