A Teacher Who Can't Spell

by Erica

I just looked at the title of my last post and realized that I misspelled the word 'remember'. Nice. You would think that I would catch these things being a teacher and all. However, again today I was reminded that I can't spell (and often make many editing mistakes in my writing). I created a project for all the kindergarten classes this week. It consisted of a block letter drawn on an oversized piece of paper. At the bottom of the paper was a word with the same beginning sound as the letter followed by a picture of that word. For example: If 'A' was drawn on the paper, the word 'apple' was written and then there was a picture of an apple. Still with me? Well, for the letter 'W' I wrote the word 'watermelon'. I realized for the first time today (after all copies were made and colored) that watermelon is spelled with one 'l' instead of two. Yes, it has taken me 27 years to learn how to spell 'watermelon'.

Sad, isn't it.

(This post does not entitle people to comment about every error they see in my posts. You need to love me for who I am).

Shame on them for taking phonics out of the curriculum during those crucial years!!! When will they learn that the old way still remains the best way? Forget all the new-fangled trends in teaching!!!!!!

We didn't realize until too late that there was a problem with the curriculum, because you got A+ on all your spelling tests!!!! But, all you were doing was memorizing a list of words by rote.

Again---SHAME ON THEM! (And what's really sad is that the ones who make these rules are people in high places who have never been inside a classroom.) Can you tell this is a big frustration of mine regarding education?
