National Geographic

by Erica

Opps. I am waiting to get some phone calls on this one.

At the beginning of the school year I was given some National Geographic magazines for my classroom. Not thinking, I added them to my classroom library for my students to look at. For the first two weeks of school, I was impressed at how much they liked looking at the pictures.

Until yesterday.

I had a girl come up to me and show me a picture of an African women. Not looking closely, I told her, "Yep, that is the way that African women dress. They look different than we do." She insistantly pointed at the picture of the woman (who of coarse was topless). I quickly tore out the page and thumbed through the rest of the magazine of which I had to tear out about 5 more pages. I wonder how many kids have seen nude pictures in the magazines in my room.

Next time we talk, remind me to tell you a story similar to this.
