Flower Boxes

I would like to plant some flowers in a couple flower boxes for our porch. Does anyone have any recommendations on types of flowers or any other vital information for me? So far my knowledge on this subject is coming from the internet.

When you're planting flowers it's nice to have a layered effect: have the center flower/evergreen item about 18" and then get other flowers/varieties layering at lower levels in degrees, with the outer layer being a spreading flower such as verbena. Also, plant flowers that will flower in different seasons so that you can have a three-season show... (and an evergreen centerpiece will keep the show going through winter and reduce the amount you have to replant next spring).
